چکیده

This number of Mycological Research News features: In this issue; Fungi associated with insects or used for applied biocontrol ; Powdery mildews as invasive plant pathogens: new epidemics caused by two North American species in Europe; and Genetic differences among nuclei in arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. This theme issue on fungi associated with insects includes ten papers on this topic. These demonstrate that beetle guts are an amazingly rich source of hitherto unknown yeasts, and a zygosporic stage in Harpellales ; report the discovery of the first fossil member of Laboulbeniomycetes, and a new Leptographium associated with a bark beetle ; examine genetic diversity at the molecular level in Pandora neoaphidis and Beauveria bassiana ; identify the genes expressed during conidiation in Metarhizium anisopliae ; report a heterothallic mating system in Termitomyces ; and describe two low cost methods for the bulk-culturing of Zoophthora radicans and other entomophthoralean fungi. Other papers introduce a new molecular fingerprinting method for the biofungicidal Pseudozyma flocculosa ; reassesses generic concepts in six genera of smut fungi ; reveal that Podosphaera tridactyla is paraphyletic ; and demonstrate the production of a N-acetylglucosaminidase by a Neotyphodium endophyte inside its grass host. Fruit body initiation in Pleurotus ostreatus is found to require a sugar moeity, and the localization and expression of ostreolysin during the fruiting process is also examined. The following new scientific names are introduced: Leptographium koreanum, and Stigmatomyces succini spp. nov. ; and Sporisorium fascicularis (syn. Lundquistia fascicularis) comb. nov.

Understanding the mechanisms responsible for divergence and specialization of pathogens on different hosts is of fundamental importance, especially in the context of the emergence of new diseases via host shifts. Temporal isolation has been reported in a few plants and parasites, but is probably one of the least studied speciation processes. We studied whether temporal isolation could be respon...

The Powdery Mildew Disease of Arabidopsis: A Paradigm for the Interaction between Plants and Biotrophic Fungi.

The powdery mildew diseases, caused by fungal species of the Erysiphales, have an important economic impact on a variety of plant species and have driven basic and applied research efforts in the field of phytopathology for many years. Although the first taxonomic reports on the Erysiphales date back to the 1850's, advances into the molecular biology of these fungal species have been hampered b...

Spore Germination, Infection Structure Formation, and Colony Development of Erysiphe pulchra on Dogwood Leaves and Glass Slides

Flowering dogwood (Cornus florida L.) is used as an important ornamental tree in North America, Japan, and Europe. Since 1995, epidemics of powdery mildew caused by Erysiphe pulchra (Cooke and Peck) U. Braun & S. Takamatsu (syn. Microsphaera pulchra Cooke and Peck) have impeded production of flowering dogwood throughout much of the eastern United States. The fungus is an obligate parasite and g...

Comparison of ITS sequences from UK and North American sugar-beet powdery mildews and the designation of Erysiphe betae.

Powdery mildew of sugar beet, a disease of major economic significance, was first described at the beginning of the 20th century, and since then there has been some confusion over the correct taxonomic identity of the causal agent. In Europe, the fungus was initially classified as the novel species Microsphaera betae, later re-named Erysiphe betae, whilst in America it was identified as E. poly...

A brief global review on the species of cucurbit powdery mildew fungi and new records in Taiwan

In spite of the economic importance of powdery mildew on cucurbits, literature and databases about the fungal species reveal different species numbers and names, often indicating only two species, with inconsistent host specificities for different members of Cucurbitaceae. Revision of the available literature indicates the presence of at least six species of powdery mildews on Cucurbitaceae wit...
